User experience design is part of the user centred design approach and starts with an analysis of the client’s requirements, their users and their competitors. User journeys and IA are worked out, hand drawn page sketches are produced followed by low-fi or hi-fi digital wireframes. Functionality and interaction design are also planned.
The wireframes are now turned into something more akin to what you would expect when browsing websites; a nice, well designed user interface, the pretty stuff. A few variations may be worked on and tweaked to satisfy the designer's eye but will eventually lead to the final UI that users will see and use.
The UI is now turned into a fully working & functional static or responsive website. HTML5 markup is used to create the site structure while CSS3 is used to style the site. Typically jQuery is then used to execute the lovely interactive touches, identified in the UX phase, that round off the experience.
